Do you know what is in your body?

Dr. Aderonke Omotade, Wellness Therapies

Now you can with body composition analysis.
Body composition analysis enhances weight management programs by allowing for a non-invasive and convenient method of assessing the body’s physiological state.   Body composition technology objectively measures multiple parameters including muscle mass, visceral fat, and fluid balance. With just your weight, height and waist circumference, the technology can analyze nutritional status and health risk.
The body composition technology calculates and displays skeletal muscle mass for the entire body as well as for each limb and the torso. This allows for the comparison of muscle strength between lower and upper extremities as well as between the left and right side of the body. One of the challenges of aging is the loss of muscle mass. This muscle loss in combination with increased fat (obesity) leads to an unhealthy body composition. Body composition technologies allows for the evaluation of this condition and the creation of targeted therapies.

Another critical measure is visceral fat. There are two types of fat tissue in the abdomen; the subcutaneous fat that lives underneath the skin and the visceral fat that surrounds the organs. Visceral fat is unable to be seen with the naked eye unlike the subcutaneous fat that is typically referred to as “pot belly”. Visceral fat is considered a particularly unhealthy distribution of fat and has led to worse health outcomes such as diabetes and heart disease.
Fluid balance remains a critical component of the body composition analysis. The body is mainly composed of water and that water is retained either in the intracellular space or the extracellular space. The extracellular space, which includes fluids such as the blood in the body, holds one-third of the body water. The other two-thirds of the body water remains in the intracellular space. Calculation of fluid balance can assist in determining whether an individual is adequately hydrated or if an individual is retaining water.

Body composition technologies allows not only for the evaluation of health risk but is also integral in monitoring progress of any weight loss efforts. Ideally, weight loss efforts should result in loss of body fat while maintaining muscle mass.
In less than 10 minutes, you too can have the skinny on your body’s composition.
