Stress can permeate through all parts of your life, and will quickly become overwhelming unless you are able to manage your stress. There are many strategies for managing your stress, and the only way to figure out which ones are going to help you is to try them. Below, we’ll take a look at what we call the 4 A’s of stress management.

Avoid

Although it may sound a little obvious, avoiding stress is one of the best ways to beat it. If you know that there are specific situations or environments that cause you stress, do what you can to avoid them. If you can learn to simply avoid your cause of stress, you can focus on healthier activities and enjoy freedom from stress. But, in the event that your stress cannot be avoided, try one of the following strategies.

Alter

When your stress can’t be avoided, try to alter the situation in your favor. Identify the specific source of your stress in a given situation or environment. Then, consider some ways you can change the situation to eliminate stress – or, at the very least, reduce the stress so that it becomes less severe.

Accept

In some cases, there is nothing you can do but accept stress. Still, recognizing this fact gives you a path forward. It is normal to experience stress, but you have the power to take the stress and deal with it in a healthy way. This might mean talking to someone, such as a friend, family member or mental health professional. Or, it might mean talking with yourself – practice positive self-talk and you will notice that your words begin to come true.

Adapt

The struggle of coping with stress is often another source of stress. Try to stop this cycle by changing your perspective or your situation. If you can’t deal with the stress currently, try adapting to become a version of yourself that can handle the stress. The personal growth that you achieve through this process can be immense, and will only make you a stronger individual.

Still Struggling with Stress Management?

In addition to these techniques, there are many treatments and activities you can take advantage of to help combat stress. Activities like meditation, exercise and creative writing can be a good way to manage and deal with stress. Treatments, such as acupuncture, massage therapy, or life coaching can also be hugely beneficial to stress management.
